Quay Street
Quay Street is said by many to be the finest street in Newport, and it's not hard to see why this should be so; it is impressively broad, and nearly all the buildings, on both sides of the street, are listed as being of architectural importance. Even the court, which lies between the house and the river, although a modern building, is not offensive to the eye.
Number 11

The house itself is of a grander stature than most - indeed, we understand that at one time, the houses that are now numbers 10 and 11 were, in fact, one very large residence. Quay Street is very close to the centre of Newport, yet it is relatively quiet most of the time - the way the traffic system is arranged in Newport, it seems that Quay Street is not generally used as a short-cut to anywhere and so there is a low volume of through traffic.

The Quay Arts Centre is a stone's throw away
Newport
Rarely have we been in such a convenient location; everything is within easy walking distance, including shops, multiplex cinema, take-aways, the Lord Louis Library, the schools (there are several primaries, 3 or 4 middle schools, 2 or 3 high schools and the college all within walking distance) and churches of all denominations. Vast open spaces can be found at Seaclose Park (the home of the Isle of Wight festival) along with access to all kinds of sporting facilities. The farthest navigable point of the River Medina can be seen from the front door, and the Quay Arts Centre is less than 5 minutes stroll down the road. Even the out-of-town stores are not too far away to walk to and include Curries, Matalan, M&S, Safeways/Morrisons, Sainsburys, Sainsburys 24 hour garage and mini-store, Maplin Electronics, various furniture stores and carpet warehouses. A very large B&Q lies just outside Newport (3 minutes by car), as does the hospital (recently praised for its improvements). The town itself is well-served by a variety of stores - some small independents and some names well-known to every high street in the UK. Access to the system of main roads connecting Newport (very much the hub of the island) to other towns throughout the island is a couple of minutes away, it takes less than 10 minutes to drive to the Portsmouth ferry at Fishbourne (it's about the same to East Cowes for the Southampton ferry), Cowes is approximately 4 miles away, and the glorious, unspoilt beaches on the south of the island can be reached in approximately 20 minutes.
